NMB48 Team M — パンパン パパパン

The team songs on NMB’s new single, 母校へ帰れ！ (bokou e kaere! / Return to Your Alma Mater!) are fantastic. I like catchy songs, fun lyrics, and cute MVs, and all three deliver. These feel very much in what I think of as the spirit of NMB in general.

My favorite of the three is the Team M song パンパン パパパン (pan pan pa pa pan / Pan Pan, Pa Pa Pan) — think clapping. I feel this song and its choreo fit Miru perfectly with a bit of pouting, silliness, and sexiness. The dresses are also all great — really, everyone looks beautiful in the video, especially Nagisa in her pink ruffles and electric smile. This even had one of those, “Wow, who is that?” moments for me with Kawakami Rena stunning it up in the center of the 2nd row.

The lyrics are a pretty self-aware, but I appreciate the highlighting of just what’s so fascinating to me about Japanese idol culture. It’s so rhythmical, I did feel like the translations fit particularly poorly; maybe I can fix it up one day when my Japanese is better. I’ve also gone over and re-done every line of this one so many times my eyes are blurry, so let’s go with what I have for now.

Surprisingly they’ve also uploaded (and left up even after the release) the full versions of all five MVs from this single on NMB’s YouTube channel, so check them out!
