ソーユートコあるよね? (SOU YUU TOKO aru yo ne? / Ain’t That Just How It Is?), the title track of SKE’s latest single, didn’t really catch me at first, but for some reason it’s recently grabbed my attention. Maybe I’m more in the mood for a pumped-up song than back in wintery January when it released.
The song itself isn’t anything profound – it seems insecurity and jealousy are pretty tried-and-true themes for idol music recently, but still I like the playfulness of this one. It’s got fun flow and lyrics, a catchy tune, and reasonable vocals even if Suda is a little squeaky.
The bright colors, not overbearing CG, and movement in the music video makes up for what is otherwise a pretty simple setting. And the choreography is maybe a bit goofy at times, but I think it matches the tone of the music if not the lyrics.
While I think it’s too bad Jurina’s not in this, the MV does give really nice shots of the other members and let’s them show off a lot of good expressions. I feel like I know only a small number of SKE members at this point, but my favorites are all here. Even Kano gets some nice screen time, and Nao and Mina look appropriately fierce.
I’ve probably gone back and re-done my translation on this one more than any but my Little Glee Monster songs. It’s got that killer combination of fun nonsense slang, triple negatives, multiple speakers, and a bunch of implied subjects. So I had to make some big guesses and run with it – hopefully people will let me know if I’m way off the mark!
