Another gem hiding in a theater edition! Since it seems like I’ve been working my way through the 46 and 48 groups, I thought I’d do an HKT song next.
I don’t know much of their back catalog, and though their most recent single’s not bad, I was looking for something that emphasized my HKT favorites. In particular those being Matsuoka Hana, Murakawa Bibian, and Imamura Maria.
Imagine my surprise then when watching this year’s AKB Request Hour and finding coming in at #11, by all three of the HKT 2nd Draft Generation members, 仮想恋愛 (kasou renai / Virtual Love). It’s a silly techno-pop song from HKT’s previous single, 早送りカレンダー (hayaokuri KARENDAA / Fast-forward Calendar), about preferring a virtual boyfriend, and the pitch and rhythm match those three pretty well.
I find the Hana-Bibi-Maria combi to be a particularly fun, relaxing group. It’s nice that though they got grouped together years ago by random chance, they’re clearly good friends now. To me they’re like an island of happy innocence in what has lately been a pretty turbulent idol world. Not that they don’t have their struggles – Hana long heavily pushed by management and Bibian exhausting herself with non-stop variety, video production, and contests.
This 2019 Request Hour performance is an abridged version of the song, but I haven’t found a full one yet.
