Right as I started getting interested in Japanese music, I think I just searched YouTube to see what I could come up with. I’m pretty sure SHISHAMO was one of the first great bands I hit upon.
Well, in truth I haven’t found a lot of their songs that I really like that much. But the ones that do catch my ear are really great. It’s also always fun to see them on major music shows right beside all the big budget productions.
Their first song I remember coming across, and probably still my favorite, is 僕に彼女ができたんだ (boku ni kanajo ga dekita nda / I’ve Gotta Girlfriend) from their 2013 debut album SHISHAMO.
As far the kinds of Japanese pop music I like goes, maybe it feels the most similar to American music. It also has fairly straightforward, beginner-friendly Japanese lyrics, so it feels more… approachable, maybe? (This is probably jinxing my translation straight away) The video also feels fresh, like a breakout hit from an unknown startup — and maybe it kinda was.
In any case, I was just a little looser with the translation and the fonts here ’cause it felt like that was appropriate.
