Hot off of Nogi’s latest single しあわせの保護色 (shiawase no hogosyoku / Camouflage of Happiness) this wonderful B-side snuck out and became by far my favorite song this spring.
Just from the English in the lyrics, サヨナラ Stay with me (SAYONARA Stay with me / Goodbye… Stay with me) sounds like it might be a pleading love song, and well, it is that. But for some reason I find its sadness quite affecting. The catchy tune, short and to the point lyrics, and blend of languages makes this a great earworm.
Since this is the all-type B-side I expected it to be an unders song, or maybe even a second senbatsu song, but instead it has a puzzling mix of top members from each generation (except the much-maligned 2nd gens). Turns out it is an advertising tie-up with Bourbon Fettuccine Gummy snacks, and there’s a series of commercials and short movies featuring those members.
Well I’m not sure that actually explains the selection of the song or the cast, but it’s nice to see Yoda, Kubo, and the 4th-gen aces getting more screen time. Hopefully Manatsu shows up too at some point.
I often find spliced English lyrics in Japanese songs a bit awkward grammatically if not pronunciation-wise, but fortunately here they work pretty well in both aspects!
